Developing a theme

All great artists develop themes throughout their work.  I have been thinking about trying to convey some pieces of personal sentiment to my music, the only trouble is finding the right form for it to take. I have been contemplating adding lyrics to some of my songs to add more meaning to them as I find it important for my album to represent something larger than a selection of songs. I wish for them to all be building blocks. I am undecided what theme I wish to convey however, but I will be thinking this over for weeks to come.

  1. Hi Gavin,
I hope you see your words and use them to research and thus overcome your current obstacle -- I bet there's something out there to help you do it!

  2. Gavin,

I think it's good you've chosen to address the question of a theme this early on in your project. I know personally all my favorite albums are strengthened by strong themes. If you're in need of any inspiration on this topic I'd suggest checking out the analysis and music on Built to Spill's ,Perfect From Now On, and Pavement's Terror Twilight. I think that Doug Martsch and Stephen Malkmus have really mastered strong themes in music.
